Why not take a trip to Mount Pico? It’s the highest peak in Portugal and both an awe-inspiring and amazing natural monument to witness. There are a number of creatures to see as well from the Iberian wolf to the brown goat and the badger. It will be a great experience for any traveller unfamiliar to the territory. It is also an excellent area for bird watching as hundreds of birds make their way to Portugal for migration.
There is an interesting Portuguese story about some children who saw the mother Mary in 1917. It is said that she appeared to them in all her wonder. That site (Fatima) has now become part of Portuguese heritage and is a monument of the pilgrimage. On 13 May and 13 October, they hold torchlight processions here and commemorate her appearance to the children. The Portuguese love to remember their history and there are a number of monuments that reflect this love. You can visit the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza.
